Twenty-four enthusiastic members of the Mercedes-Benz Auckland Club braved the uncertain weather to enjoy a memorable one-day rally to Nikau Caves Café in the northwestern Waikato.
The day began at BP Autobahn in South Auckland (Ed – Papakura or Drury, the usual rendezvous!), where an impressive collection of Mercedes-Benz vehicles of all shapes, sizes, and ages gathered before heading south into the mighty Waikato. The convoy encountered only a minor delay—having to wait through two green-light cycles—but otherwise enjoyed a smooth journey along quiet country roads featuring plenty of sweeping curves and very little traffic.
Despite threatening skies, we successfully dodged both the rain clouds and the rain itself. Along the way, the question of the day was: Did Ross ever manage to get rid of the rats in his car? Opinions varied, but a definitive answer remained elusive.
Stephen and Chris brought along their dogs, who thoroughly enjoyed the outing. With three dogs attending, the event quickly became known as a “three-dog day” rather than a three-dog night. Kath and David, along with Roy and Marianne, made their own way directly to the café from home.
Lunch at Nikau Caves Café was a highlight. The menu featured plenty of hearty country fare, including wild sausage stacks, roast vegetable quiche, homemade breads, and a tempting selection of cakes that were enjoyed by all. At our table, the famous sausage stack was described as “a heart attack waiting to happen,” prompting an impromptu discussion on CPR techniques. The consensus was that chest compressions should be performed to the rhythm of the Bee Gees’ classic Stayin’ Alive.
Unfortunately, the planned cave adventure had to be postponed. Recent rainfall had left water levels too high for a safe cave visit, so that experience will have to wait for another day.
The return journey was rewarded with beautiful sunshine and several spectacular rainbows stretching across the Waikato sky. Combined with the excellent roads, light traffic, good company, and enjoyable lunch, it made for a wonderful day out that was appreciated by everyone who attended.
A great day of motoring, friendship, and countryside touring—another successful Mercedes-Benz Auckland Club rally.
