Saturday 15th August, after a wet night, the day cleared in time for Auckland members to gather at Western Springs before heading North to Matakana to meet up with some of the Classic and Sports Car Club members.
It was an easy drive up the motorway, turning off at Warkworth and then on to Matakana. Some of us parked up in the free carpark next to the primary school, but there was a bit of confusion on which carpark to go to, however we did all manage to get together eventually.
We milled about having a chat amongst ourselves while we waited for the other club to arrive. It was a bit breezy and cool but the weather stayed fine for us. As we were preparing to head off to the markets, one of the CSCC members locked their keys in the boot of their car. Someone wasn’t happy! But the professionals were called and eventually said keys were retrieved from the locked boot.
Off to the markets we all went with a couple of hours to kill and it was already quite crowded. Coffees were ordered by a few of us and everyone walked around at their leisure. There was the usual abundance of farmers market produce and artisan breads, chocolates, gin and small goods. The smell of delicious food being cooked was making me hungry, but I didn’t want to spoil my appetite for lunch later on.
I think I looked at every stall twice, so was happy to re-group back at the carpark before heading off to Plume Restaurant for lunch. This is a very nice restaurant attached to a winery. We were seated in the outdoors area at a long table. Drinks and meals were ordered from a three-course set menu. I have to say, the food was superb – compliments to the chef! I would definitely go back again.
A couple of hours later it was time to head back home. A great day out. Thanks to Phil Scot for organising this event for the two clubs.
